History

Hum-WE was established in January of 2017 and received charitable status in January of 2021.

Initially starting off as an advocacy group, Hum-We has made efforts to address and prevent specific problems faced by South Asian women who have been emotionally and physically abused or traumatized by domestic violence.

In 2021, Hum-WE initialized a three-day emergency shelter providing temporary stay to women escaping immediate threat and violence. In 2023, Hum-WE opened its very first transitional home facility in Milton. This transitional home is currently functional and provides shelter to over 10 women and children. In the first 6 months in 2025, the shelter has facilitated 35 women requiring assistance in various capacities.
